About

The ISA qualification Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (ISA TRAQ) is a voluntary qualification program designed to train and evaluate candidates in a specialized area of arboriculture. When a professional attains the ISA TRAQ qualification, they should be recognized by their peers and the public as a tree care professional with specialized knowledge in tree risk assessment. To obtain this qualification, eligible candidates must undergo training and successfully pass both a comprehensive written assessment and a practical assessment. To maintain their qualification, TRAQ qualification holders must undergo retraining and retake the exam every seven (7) years.

The program offers tree care professionals the opportunity to learn a standardized and systematic tree risk assessment process and to provide information to tree owners and risk managers when making decisions that promote the safety of people and property and enhance the benefits, health, and longevity of trees. Once the program is successfully completed, qualified professionals:

  • master the fundamentals of limited and basic tree risk assessment, as defined in the ISA's publication "Best Management Practices: Tree Risk Assessment;
  • understand the principles of advanced diagnostic techniques for evaluating tree risks;
  • know how to gather and synthesize the necessary information to assess tree risks; and
  • are capable of making reasoned judgments and formulating recommendations for mitigating identified risks.
